He was appointed at the 2002 Loya Jirga as the Interim President of the Afghan Transitional Administration. After the 2004 Afghan presidential election, Karzai became the President of Afghanistan. ==Antecedents== After the 7 October 2001, Operation Enduring Freedom, Mujahideen loyal to the Northern Alliance and other groups worked with the US military to overthrow the Taliban and muster support for a new government in Afghanistan. Karzai and his group were in Quetta, Pakistan, where they began their covert operation. At this stage he warned his fighters by stating: In October 2001, Hamid Karzai and his group of fighters survived a US friendly fire missile attack in southern Afghanistan.
