Presidency of Hamid Karzai

The Karzai administration was the internationally recognised government of Afghanistan under President Hamid Karzai, who became the head of state of Afghanistan in December 2001, after the Taliban government was removed. He was appointed at the 2002 Loya Jirga as the Interim President of the Afghan Transitional Administration. After the 2004 Afghan presidential election, Karzai became the President of Afghanistan.

After the 7 October 2001, Operation Enduring Freedom, Mujahideen loyal to the Northern Alliance and other groups worked with the US military to overthrow the Taliban and muster support for a new government in Afghanistan. Karzai and his group were in Quetta, Pakistan, where they began their covert operation. At this stage he warned his fighters by stating:
In October 2001, Hamid Karzai and his group of fighters survived a US friendly fire missile attack in southern Afghanistan. The group suffered injuries and was treated in the United States; Karzai received injuries to his facial nerves as can sometimes be noticed during his speeches.〔(Afghanistan, from the 18 August — 25 August 2003 issue of TIME magazine ).〕 On 4 November 2001, American forces flew Karzai out of Afghanistan for protection.〔The Guardian, (Taliban lose grip on Mazar i Sharif ), 7 November 2001.〕
